As a recent graduate of the Evergreen State College, I focused my Bachelors of Science in biology, neurobiology and communications. Of personal interest to me is the challenge of presenting statistics and data to non-scientists. While I am pursuing a career in research, I am also looking to utilize my communications skills to help bridge the gap between the public, scientists and government officials. When information is accessible, voters and consumers can better influence policies that impact their health and safety.
Plus, science is cool. Biology and neurobiology are my specialties, but physics, engineering, mathematics, ecology, and environmental sciences are all comfortable areas for me. I have held a number of diverse jobs from forestry to veterinary medicine. This background gives me a network of contacts as well as hands on experience in a variety of scientific fields.
Aside from these areas of expertise, I also have a lot to offer clients when it comes to the logistics and mechanics of writing. I type at least 45 wpm and my research skills have been honed from years in academia--where collaborative projects ranging from research papers to journalistic articles were stressed under deadlines. I am experienced with procuring and conducting interviews, tracking my sources responsibly, and tailoring my writing style to fit specific readers. With a background in neuroscience, I am also aware of how the human brain learns best with pictures. This has led me to pay close attention to how graphs and diagrams can be utilized to enhance written communications.
Not only do I have the education to understand the fundamental concepts involved in the above mentioned fields, but I can interpret those concepts in a timely manner and in a range of voices and formats to suit the needs of clients and their audiences.
