Making the Most of Sun and Water in Rural India

Perched 4,200 feet in the southern Himalayas, the Nauni-Majgoan Panchayat, a village council overseeing nine hamlets in India’s Himachal Pradesh state, is on the tipping point of climate change. On the peaks above, the Chhota Shigri glacier has been receding at an accelerated pace; on the road below, the village of Solan has morphed into a small city replete with concrete office buildings and business lunches. Demand for water — to spin hydroelectric generators, to irrigate crops and for residential use — is soaring throughout the area.

Box Stores Target Lighting Inefficiencies

American retailers looking to save energy are aiming high — just below the roof rafters. That’s where a small revolution is underway to replace 70-year-old magnetic-ballast lighting technology with efficient electronic circuitry. By using electronic ballasts — the transformers that regulate the current and voltage needed to operate the lamps — and a software-based energy management system, Wal-Mart, Publix and other retailers say they can typically cut a store’s lighting costs in half.

‘Biosolids’ and Human Health

On May 3, business executives, agronomists and hydrologists are expected to gather for the Residuals and Biosolids 2009 conference at Portland’s Oregon Convention Center, where awkward jokes about squeezing profits from human excreta-based crop fertilizer are an inevitability. But the business is no joke. In 2009 alone, American farmers will likely fertilize their fields with 4 million dry tons of biosolids, a polite term for specially processed sludge — much of it originating in municipal sewage plants in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities, according to the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, a wastewater treatment trade group.

With new skills, tractor repair students scout for work in Haiti

Sandra Manacé never knew what to expect from her patients. Diarrhea one day, pneumonia and fevers the next. Now, her patients present a whole new set of symptoms: cracked universal joints, leaking oil pans and frayed circuitry. That’s because Manacé went back to school in 2012 to learn agricultural mechanics after being laid off as an auxiliary nurse by the financially strapped health center for which she had been working.

Irish Catskills: Dancing at the Crossroads

<PBS video> THE IRISH CATSKILLS: DANCING AT THE CROSSROADS is a fascinating documentary that looks at the history and legacy of the Irish Catskills, an enclave of inns, hotels, and bungalows in New York’s famed vacation spot that was a summer getaway for many Irish Americans. The film traces the history and legacy of this beloved chapter of Irish-Americana by using archival photos, home movies, dozens of interviews and contemporary videography to tell the story on a personal and anecdotal scale.
