American retailers looking to save energy are aiming high — just below the roof rafters. That’s where a small revolution is underway to replace 70-year-old magnetic-ballast lighting technology with efficient electronic circuitry. By using electronic ballasts — the transformers that regulate the current and voltage needed to operate the lamps — and a software-based energy management system, Wal-Mart, Publix and other retailers say they can typically cut a store’s lighting costs in half.

On May 3, business executives, agronomists and hydrologists are expected to gather for the Residuals and Biosolids 2009 conference at Portland’s Oregon Convention Center, where awkward jokes about squeezing profits from human excreta-based crop fertilizer are an inevitability. But the business is no joke. In 2009 alone, American farmers will likely fertilize their fields with 4 million dry tons of biosolids, a polite term for specially processed sludge — much of it originating in municipal sewage plants in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities, according to the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, a wastewater treatment trade group.

Sandra Manacé never knew what to expect from her patients. Diarrhea one day, pneumonia and fevers the next. Now, her patients present a whole new set of symptoms: cracked universal joints, leaking oil pans and frayed circuitry. That’s because Manacé went back to school in 2012 to learn agricultural mechanics after being laid off as an auxiliary nurse by the financially strapped health center for which she had been working.

PBS documentary contributor/ owner, Narrowback Films. Director, writer and co-producer of The Irish Catskills: Dancing at the Crossroads. The documentary film premiered on three regional PBS stations in March 2016. It aired on WNET, the nation’s largest PBS station, in September 2016. In November 2016, the film will be offered nationally to PBS stations through American Public Television. The Irish Catskills took approximately five years to complete, typical of the genre. Kevin directed all shoots; hired freelance cameramen and editors in US and Ireland; sourced all archival materials; and directed business development. Kevin also produced, designed and wrote the DVD version, including the packaging. He continues to drive digital and offline sales, and is arranging theatrical releases in the US and Northern Ireland.
