About Me

I have worked in non-profit public and media relations, publications and marketing for almost 20 years. My media experience includes being responsible for alerting the press to newsworthy stories, connecting experts and media resources, advising experts on creating and placing op-eds, developing relationships with major media, and dealing with crisis communications. I have experience in speech writing, print and online publication production, budgeting, and managing freelancers. Events I've organized include press conferences, recruitment and promotional conference booths, wine tastings and product launches. I have an Ed.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies focused on media and culture from Teachers College, Columbia University. Academically, I have explored television, online discussion groups and culture with a focus on reality TV programs and Hungarian television. I have taught at the college level about media and popular culture, media theory, public relations, public presentation, and integrated marketing communications, as well as online and study abroad classes. My interest in Hungary also includes experience in and knowledge about Hungarian wines and wine regions. I imported Hungarian wines into the U.S. for three years, and I taught at Kecskemet College in Hungary for one year, and I am conversational in the Hungarian language and I am familiar with the country and the culture. I have begun writing a series of books and soon a blog: Getting Hungary, Thirsty for Hungary and Hungry in Hungary. A grant from SUNY Center for Collaborative Online and International Learning (COIL) allowed me to create an online course in Global Wine Marketing with a Hungarian partner professor, after which I led a study abroad tour to Hungary about Hungarian foods, wines, and agricultural business and marketing. In May 2014, I received a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Internationalization for my proposal to lead a second Hungarian study abroad class related to film. Experience

Freelance Writer/Communications Consultant

As a freelance writer, I cover local stories related to agriculture, aquaculture, agribusiness, local history and food for the Citrus County Chronicle, and I'm always on the lookout for stories and publications beyond, particularly travel and tourism pieces. My work as a communications consultant includes working with small business owners to create content for websites and blogs, write bios, produce social media posts, and advise on media relations. I'm available to present on topics related to PR and writing, as well as my personal interests and writing, which include the following: I've contributed to anthologies on traveling solo and destination discoveries, and I have begun a series of books on Hungary and Hungarian food and wine. I also speak and write about research on topics related to my academic area of interest -- specifically paranormal beliefs and studies, belief in the afterlife, and death in popular culture. I maintain tumblr blogs on Diane's Discoveries (travel and food), Getting Hungary (personal stories about Hungary), and Grammar Grandma (grammatical discussions), and I oversee the Getting Hungary Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gettinghungary, and the @magyargirl and @dhdobry Twitter feeds. I've also written about media and paranormal in popular culture, on ghostdoctor.blogspot.com and ghostdoctor.newsvine.com. A personal interest in astrology has led to the creation of Hungarian Aquarian, a Tumblr blog and Twitter feed related to the current sky and astrological interpretation of planetary placements. See those posts at hungarianaquarian.tumblr.com and on Twitter, @hungarianaquar1 .
