About Me

Writer, editor, communications person and lecturer with subject matter including the arts, property, architecture and travel. 


As a journalist I contribute to a wide variety of publications including Management Today, The Sunday Times (Home section, Style and Magazine), The Times, The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, The Guardian, The Observer and most British national newspapers on subjects ranging from arts, travel, property, architecture, design, social issues and general features (links/cuttings all available).


I have worked in-house at several newspapers and magazines, editing sections and pages including Financial Times’ The Business Magazine, the Sunday Times magazine, Creative Review and Design Week – involving editing, managing teams, commissioning, budgets et al. I edited the travel section on the Independent on Sunday, the Telegraph travel news section and the Independent’s property section. I have made contributions on similar kinds of topics to many specialist journals and magazines including Landscape Institute magazine, Radio Times, BBC Homes and Antiques, Grand Designs magazine, Homes and Gardens, Elle Decoration, Creative Review and Design Week as well as consumer magazines such as Psychologies and Sainsbury’s Magazine and agencies like The Future Laboratory and The School of Life. I work as a visiting lecturer in journalism and hold a sessional post at University of Falmouth in its MA Writing course, and also for the University of the Arts (Epsom campus) in the fashion journalism BA. I have also lectured in journalism at Brunel University, as well as several lecturing jobs (on UK press) for American universities.


Have edited several contract magazines (including working on online strategies) including Odyssey for small-ship cruise company Noble Caledonia, 1806 Magazine for estate agents Chesterton Humberts, Heyday magazine for Age Concern. Worked in-house at Redwood magazines and at newspapers (including the Express) on launches for the English Tourist Board and Sunday Times mag on Saatchi supplements.


I have contributed to several books most recently for Lonely Planet’s Great Escapes and the Virgin Guide to London and have written a book on public art and place-making, published by arts organisation Commissions East and have co-written Designing Utopia (with Cathy Ross of Museum of London) on Kibbo Kift group (published Sept 2015).


Specialist projects for copywriting, editing, development of tone of voice and communications.Clients include charity Plan International, public art think tank Ixia, Wales Canals and River Trust, Theis + Kahn, Roger Zogolovitch and Wilkinson Eyre architects, Tate (two annual reports), travel companies including The Safari Company, Linton developers, hotel companies Doyle’s and Clermont, design companies including luxury furniture brand Se, property developer and 100% Design. Previous clients include Ford, Disney, 100% Design and Eurostar. Have provided scheduled blogs for travel company Cazenove + Loyd, estate agent KFH, charities Friends of the Earth and Plantlife. I have also worked in public relations on tourism accounts for Visit Cheshire, Visit Lincolnshire, Visit Suffolk and the North West Development Agency on strategy and campaigns, as well as press office work. I work on projects for strengths-based recruitment company Engaging Minds. This work involved public speaking and advocacy work. Have done much public facing activity and talks, including for Birmingham event organisation Fierce Earth and South West Arts. Was contributing editor to the Arts and Architecture Journal and have written and edited several arts catalogues, including the Edge 90 catalogue for Performance Art. Radio and TV contributions include Radio Five Live and regional BBC work. Gallery talks at London art galleries inc Tate Britain, The Whitechapel Gallery, Lift festival, Stoke’s Ceramics Biennial and The British Museum. Directorships: Mount Pleasant Association, a development company funded by GLA grant in London. Memberships: 26 Copywriting agency.
