A deep academic dive into enslaved cooks changes a Charleston chef's approach

Charleston changed Kevin Mitchell. The chef instructor at Trident Tech's Culinary Institute of Charleston (CIC) wasn't thinking much about the culinary journey of African Americans when he began his career. But now he has a master's degree in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi and a mission to use his knowledge to broaden his teaching and continue to delve into the story of enslaved cooks. That wouldn't have happened if his career hadn't brought him to Charleston.

YALLFest is the largest young adult book festival in the country. Founded by bookstore owner and writer Jonathan Sanchez and bestselling authors Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia, YALLFest brings a slew of authors to Charleston, S.C. the second weekend in November for a two-day book extravaganza that includes signings, panels, and performances. As producer, I oversee the down and dirty logistics of the festival, from renting tents and designing merchandise to producing the program and planning the parties.
