Hello:
My name is Brian Westland. I am an experienced blogger/ESL teacher from Toronto, Canada.
I have been a serious student of American popular music for the last 35 years, and have focused my attention upon the realms of classic jazz, blues, folk, country, R&B, gospel and other roots music from the 1910s to the 1980s. I possess an encyclopedic knowledge of early rock and roll and classic rock from the beginnings of the music in the mid-50s through to the present day. In addition to musical knowledge, I possess great knowledge and appreciation of the film industry over the last century. I possess a DVD collection of more than 1000 movie titles ranging from “The Birth of a Nation” to “The Green Book.”
I have also been an avid birder for the last 40 years. I have garnered a broad knowledge of North American and Asian bird and wildlife species during the years beginning in my youth in the Toronto area up to the last several years spent in China.
Now, in my early 50s, I would like to impart some of the knowledge I have culled throughout the years via gainful employment. I have honed my writing skills in contributions to the music review website, “Rate Your Music,” the Qingdao e-magazine, “That’s Qingdao,” and my own blog, “Pop Music Gumbo” (https://popmusicgumbo.blogspot.com/). I am also the author of the following self-published books on Amazon: “A Guide to Essential Popular Music-Volume One,” “A Guide to Essential Popular Music-Volume Two,” “Ultimate Classic Rock ,“ and “Birds of Eastern China.”
My writing in the past has ranged from sober and academic to humorous and irreverent, and I am comfortable writing in a variety of styles and voices. I can produce numerous examples of my work upon request. Alternatively, my blog, mentioned above, currently contains nearly 100 posts for your perusal.
