Graham Ivan Clark, now 18, of Tampa behind the last July’s global Twitter hacking incident pleaded guilty in March to 30 felony counts of breaching the VIP accounts of then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Tesla founder Elon Musk and others for donations to buy cryptocurrency. He will face a minimum 10-year term in an adult prison if he violates probation. Clark turned over all of the cryptocurrency obtained through the scheme — as much as $117,000.

While Marriott International is awaiting a final decision from the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over a 2018 hack at its luxury Starwood hotel chain, the company’s systems were breached nearly two years later, in January 2020. The data that eventually was leaked involved the contact details, loyalty-account information, personal details, preferences and partnerships and affiliations of as many as 5.2 million guests in Marriott’s Bonvoy loyalty program.

Nintendo has experienced several hacks in recent years — but one of its biggest came last year, when the personal identifiable information (PII) of 300,000 users was leaked in a scheme to buy Fortnite cryptocurrency. Nintendo first disclosed the attack last April 24, providing no details of how the breach was discovered or who the hackers were. It did say that this PII was leaked: nicknames, dates of birth, countries-regions and email addresses.

More than a year later, Texas officials still are not saying who was behind a massive ransomware that paralyzed the digital operations of 22 communities for a week in August 2019, though one expert told Digital Privacy News that the culprit most likely was a hacker-for-hire with ties outside of the United States. As a result, birth and death certificates, utility or other payment systems were unavailable online, according to an Aug.19 news release by officials in the north Texas city of Borger.
