I am a Pittsburgh, PA - based independent researcher and writer with a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Riverside (2021), and a B.S.M.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (2011). I worked as a Mechanical Engineer in the commercial aerospace industry (2012-2014), and briefly as a Technical Writer in the space industry (2021). My Ph.D. expertise is in Victorian literature and classical energy physics. My dissertation project theorized energy's infrastructure, which emerged contemporary to classical energy physics in the nineteenth century and naturalized western assumptions about bodies, resources, movement, and possibilities. Though we are living through our own critical political and environmental junctures, I believe that studying the nineteenth century lays bare how Victorians informed and limited a now naturalized energy concept. In other words, the Victorians are both the problem and the solution to thinking about sustainability otherwise.
My more personal projects - and where my post-Ph.D. research has headed - are in the domain of chronic illness, disability studies, and labor equity. I have an autoimmune disease and live with chronic pain that often presents as "invisible illness." I am interested in the chronically ill body as a political figure of quiet disruption. Our culture has long centered flow and productivity, and maligned rest and care; though the pandemic has dismantled many such presumptions about how workers can and should labor. My current research develops some of these threads along histories of the Victorian invalid and assumptions of "sensitive" and "feminized" chronically ill bodies in the nineteenth century.
I am interested in, and capable of, writing pieces on the history of science, on the Victorian period, on labor and care, on chronic illness, and on health and wellness.
